MASLOW’S NEED HIERARCHY

  • MASLOW’S NEED HIERARCHY
  • MASLOW’S NEED HIERARCHY
  1. MASLOW.A FAMOUS SOCIAL SCIENTIST HAS GIVEN A FRAMEWORK THAT HELPS TO EXPLAIN THE STRENGTH OF CERTAIN NEEDS. ACCORDING TO HIM THE BEHAVIOR OF AN INDIVIDUAL AT PARTICULAR MOMENT IS USUALLY DETERMINED BY HIS STRONGEST NEED. HE DEFINED A PERSON’S EFFECTIVENESS AS A FUNCTION OF MATCHING MAN’S OPPORTUNITY WITH THE APPROPRIATE POSITION OF HIERARCHY F NEEDS
  2. PSYCHOLOGIST CLAIMS THAT NEEDS HAVE A CERTAIN PRIORITY. AS THE BASIC NEEDS ARE SATISFIED ,AN INDIVIDUAL SEEKS TO SATISFY THE HIGHER NEEDS IF HIS BASIC NEEDS ARE NOT MET,EFFORTS TO SATISFY THE HIGHER NEEDS ARE POSTPONED.
  3. MASLOW PROPOSED THAT HUMAN NEEDS CAN BE ARRANGED IN PARTICULAR ORDER FROM LOWER TO HIGHER.

  • MASLOW’S NEED HIERARCHY
  1. PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS:- ARE AT THE TOP OF THE HIERARCHY. RELATE TO SURVIVAL AND MAINTENANCE OF HUMAN LIFE. INCLUDE SUCH THINGS SUCH AS FOOD,CLOTHING,SHELTER,AIR,WATER AND OTHER NECESSARIES OF LIFE.
  2. SAFETY AND SECURITY NEEDS:-AFTER SATISFYING THE PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS PEOPLE WANT THE ASSURANCE OF MAINTAINING A GIVEN ECONOMIC LEVEL. WANT JOB SECURITY,PERSONAL BODILY SECURITY,SECURITY OF SOURCE OF INCOME,PROVISION FOR OLD AGE,INSURANCE AGAINST RISK ETC
  3. SOCIAL NEEDS:-MAN IS SOCIAL BEING.HE IS THEREFORE INTERESTED IN SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE. LIKE INTERACTIONS,SOCIABILITY,EXCHANGE OF FEELING ,GRIEVANCES,COMPANIONSHIP,RECOGNITION AND BELONGING NESS

  1. EGOS NEEDS( ESTEEM AND STATUS): THE NEEDS ARE CONCERNED WITH SELF RESPECT,FEELING OF BEING UNIQUE,RECOGNITION ETC. THE SATISFACTION OF THESE NEEDS BRING CONFIDENCE,POWER,CONTROL AND PRESTIGE.
  2. SELF FULFILLMENT OR ACTUALIZATION NEEDS:-SELF-FULFILLMENT IS THE HIGHEST NEED IN MASLOW’S HIERARCHY. THIS REFERS TO THE NEEDS WHICH HELP AN INDIVIDUAL TO DEVELOP HIS POTENTIALITIES. HE TRIES TO DO WHATEVER HE CAN AND HAS SORT OF SELF DEVELOPMENT. A PERSON TRIES TO DO WHATEVER HE IS CAPABLE OF DOING. GIVE SATISFACTION TO THE CONCERNED PERSON
  • MASLOW’S NEED HIERARCHY
  1. HE FELT THAT NEEDS HAVE A DEFINITE SEQUENCE OF DOMINATION
  2. NEED DOES NOT DOMINATE UNTIL THE FIRST NEED IS REASONABLY SATISFIED AND THIRD NEED DOES NOT DOMINATE UNTIL FIRST TWO NEEDS AND SO ON
  3. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NEED HIERARCHY IS THAT MAN IS A WANTING ANIMAL. HE IS NEVER FULLY SATISFIED
  4. ONCE A NEED OR CERTAIN ORDER OF NEEDS IS SATISFIED,IT CEASES TO BE A MOTIVATING FACTOR.
  5. ONE’S LOWER LEVEL NEEDS(PHYSIOLOGICAL AND SECURITY NEEDS ) ARE UNSATISFIED HE CAN BE MOTIVATED BY SATISFYING LOWER LEVEL NEEDS NOT HIGHER LEVEL NEEDS
  • CRITICISM
  1. NO EVIDENCE WAS FOUND TO SUPPORT MASLOW’S THEORY
  2. NEEDS DO NOT FOLLOW MASLOW’S HIERARCHY, THE HIERARCHY IS DETERMINED BY INDIVIDUALS DIFFERENTLY. THEY PROCEED TO FOLLOW THEIR OWN PATTERN OF NEEDS SATISFACTION
  3. NO CAUSE AND EFFECT RELATION BETWEEN NEED AND BEHAVIOR
  4. IT IS SAID THAT HIGHER NEEDS MOTIVATE A PERSON WHEN LOWER NEEDS ARE REASONABLY SATISFIED. REASONABLY SATISFIED IS SUBJECTIVE. THE LEVEL OF SATISFACTION MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR DIFFERENT PERSONS
